Agile transformation at scale: how Alliander is organizing agile
Agile Product Management

The challenge

Alliander had the ambition to implement agile working methods organization-wide. But like many large organizations, they ran into classic bottlenecks:
  • Teams worked past each other
  • There was little visibility into work stocks and priorities
  • Stakeholders spoke ‘different languages’
  • Agile had been introduced, but not really lived yet

The challenge was to land Agile not as a method trick, but as a culture change – without losing oversight and direction.

Our approach

Our consultant began with an analysis of team dynamics and work processes across multiple teams in Alliander’s IT domain. Based on that, a plan was created for phased maturity, supported by frameworks such as SAFe and Scrum@Scale.

context

The energy transition requires more than technological innovation. It also requires agile organizational structures. Network operator Alliander has the task of preparing the Netherlands for a sustainable future – and doing so under ever-increasing pressure: scarcity on the network, tight labor markets and growing regulatory complexity. In order to respond to these challenges quickly and responsibly, Alliander opted for an agile transformation. IBS provided an experienced Agile Coach and Scrum Master for this.

The impact

  • Greater predictability in deliveries through better sprint planning and story slicing
  • Higher engagement of teams through coaching and clear goals
  • Better alignment between business and IT through role clarification and visual planning
  • Continuous learning embedded through retrospectives, peer review and communities of practice

Why this case matters

This assignment shows that agile transformation in the energy sector is not about “faster” – but about better collaboration in a complex playing field. By coupling the right guidance with substantive knowledge of SAFe and DevOps, we added value at both operational and strategic levels.

Isatis business solutions

IBS helps organizations in the energy, government and financial sectors implement Agile effectively and scalably. From coaching to SAFe implementations – we make sure it doesn’t stop at post-its, but leads to results.
