Smart insights from technical data: Gasunie digitizes its assets
Data Solutions

The challenge

Gasunie’s PIO team had to deal with a complex work environment in which large volumes of unstructured and scanned drawings had to be processed. On top of that came error-prone extraction processes, scripts that were difficult to repeat and a lack of standardization. It also lacked proper CI/CD integration, which resulted in slow and unreliable deployments within their DevOps landscape. This combination of technical obstacles made it difficult to work efficiently and scalably.

Our approach

Our consultant was involved in three diverse projects within Gasunie: the COā‚‚ monitor, Dummy Scrape and the M&R dashboard. In these projects, technical PDF documents were automatically scrapped and structured using Python in combination with fuzzy regex techniques, in order to make valuable information accessible. In addition, a robust CI/CD pipeline was established via Azure DevOps, significantly improving development and deployment processes. Finally, content was advised on sustainable data storage, data structuring and a future-proof governance approach.

context

Gasunie manages the Dutch gas transport network with thousands of assets. Much information was hidden in scanned documents and outdated sources. IBS was asked to make this information usable for monitoring, compliance and dashboarding.

The impact

PoCs were evolved into scalable pipelines, data from scans became directly usable, and collaboration between business and IT was strengthened. Data storage and access are now set up according to modern DevOps principles.

Why this case matters

Engineering organizations can extract great value from seemingly unusable data. This case shows how smart engineering enables future-proof data applications.

Isatis business solutions

IBS helps technical organizations like Gasunie make data from any source valuable – even if that source is a closet full of scans.
