Meet Your Coworker – George van Oevelen

GEORGE

Hey All, I am George and currently live in Maarssen. I am 35 years old and married to Chiung-Yi and recently became a father to Liam.

Experience/Skills

I moved from my studies in Physics into a data analyst role at Santander Consumer Finance. Worked there for almost 7 years within Marketing and Operations as a Data Analyst. Here I developed my skills in SQL and SAS. I think my strength lies in seeing the connections and linking the data to the business. In fact, I am very curious and like to know how everything works within a company.

Also have experience in the works council and thus gained knowledge of business processes and corporate politics.

Current assignment

My first job at Isatis was as a data engineer at Customs. Initially ‘sold’ as a data engineer specifically with extensive knowledge of SAS. However, the reality is that SAS is still primarily used for scheduling SQL code on their Teradata SQL server. So the expected learning to work with SAS Data Integration Studio and further learning to work with SAS specific syntax fell by the wayside. However, expanding the knowledge to SQL (because SQL in Microsoft SQL server and Teradata Studio is not exactly the same).

It is also data engineering combined with data analysis and building reporting (although we have a specialist for that on the scrum team).

Customs itself is very much in development and will soon move to Azure/Power BI and is still very young in their data management so in this I see nice challenges for the near future. And the government is always looking for more hands, so I think also opportunities for colleagues to join.

Colleague/Work style/IBS

I also enjoy coming to the office every Friday to learn from my colleagues at IBS. I also joined the Data Management group to develop myself further in this field, as it fits very well with my natural curiosity and desire to understand data processes.

I think that as a colleague I am direct and involved, but can also perhaps interfere a little too often in too many things.

Other

Outside (and during) work, I like to listen to podcasts about sports/politics/tech/gaming/education and whatever else comes along when I’m through my current list. I started playing badminton just before corona (Taiwanese father-in-law helps with this) and am trying to pick that up again. Love movies/series and PS4, but with a little one my time for that will be a bit different.
